Visions chamaniques. Arts de l’ayahuasca en Amazonie péruvienne

Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, Paris, 14 November 2023 – 26 May 2024.

I curated this exhibition, which was conceived as an extension of my anthropological research in the Peruvian Amazon. Visions chamaniques explored the relationships between visionary experiences and iconographic production through the case of ayahuasca.

Bringing together 105 works and documents, the exhibition brought Shipibo-Konibo arts, visionary painting, literary productions and audiovisual creations into dialogue. It showed how visions induced by ayahuasca are given form, interpreted and transmitted, and how their representations are transformed as this practice circulates, from the Peruvian Amazon to its contemporary reconfigurations internationally.

Ayahuasca and Art of the Amazon

Sainsbury Centre, Norwich, United Kingdom, 14 September 2024 – 2 February 2025.

I also curated the exhibition Ayahuasca and Art of the Amazon, presented at the Sainsbury Centre as part of the Why Do We Take Drugs? season, devoted to the social, cultural and artistic uses of psychoactive substances.

The exhibition explored the place of ayahuasca in the social, ritual and artistic life of the western Amazon, as well as the visual and narrative forms through which visionary experiences are shaped, interpreted and transmitted. It also addressed the international circulation of ayahuasca and the transformations of its uses and representations in contemporary contexts.

Drogues

Musée de l’Homme, Paris, France, 18 November 2026 – 6 June 2027.

I contributed to this exhibition as a scientific adviser. Drogues offers a multidisciplinary approach to psychoactive substances, seeking to move beyond simplified representations and to account for the diversity of their uses, meanings and effects across societies and historical periods.

The exhibition examines the diversity of psychoactive substances and the social construction of the category of “drugs”, the reasons why humans consume them, and the issues raised by their production, circulation and commercialization. It also addresses social and political responses to substance use, including the history and principles of harm reduction, while giving particular attention to the experiences and voices of users.

Scientific curators: François Beck, Vincent Verroust and Alain Epelboin. Exhibition curators: Marie Merlin and Charlène Camarella.
